Highly sensitive to the emotions and feelings of those around them, Empaths are sent to this world to help us face the challenges of the world and continue our journey towards spiritual awakening. They live their lives not only aware of the emotions of those around them but experiencing them mentally, emotionally and even physically.

In an article for Psychology Today, Judith Orloff M.D. explains, “empaths take the experience of the highly sensitive person much further: We can sense subtle energy (called shakti or prana in Eastern healing traditions) and actually absorb it form other people and different environments into our own bodies. Highly sensitive people don’t typically do that. This capacity allows us to experience the energy around us, including emotions and physical sensations, in extremely deep ways. And so, we energetically internalize the feelings and pain of others – and often have trouble distinguishing someone else’s discomfort from our own.”

Have you noticed that you rarely get sick compared to others in your local community? Do you feel a strong connection with someone in your life, someone that somehow understands you on a deeper, more meaningful level with no real explanation as to how? Are you naturally drawn to this person, believing that you can open up to them sharing your deepest struggles and challenges in life without fear of judgment?

Here are 6 signs that you may be in the presence of an empath:

They feel a strong connection with animals and nature.

Empaths are able to draw strength, energy and comfort from the natural world, often turning to nature in order to recharge their batteries and centre their minds. They appear to be able to connect and communicate with animals in a way that is hard to understand. For example, a frightened stray dog afraid of everyone that it encounters may let their guard down in this person’s presence, trusting them to get close and touch them.

They are always happiest when they are helping others.

These individuals are driven by a deeply rooted desire to help everyone else that they encounter, feeling strongly that it is their true calling in life. Bringing healing and happiness to other people provides an Empath with a calling in life, a true meaning for their role and a strong sense of passion. It is for this reason that they are often called to professions centred around healing such as doctors, nurses, counsellor, chiropractors and more.

They stand up for what they believe in, regardless of the personal price.

Empaths are blessed with a strong code of morals, an internal compass that always points towards all that is good and right. If they are faced with someone who is actively going against these morals they will readily stand up for what they believe in. They are also able to spot those who do not share their beliefs, identifying a liar a mile away.

They are prone to lower back problems and digestive disorders.

The centre of emotions in the body is the solar plexus chakra. Located in the centre of the abdomen, this energy centre can become overwhelmed as they absorb the emotions of those around them. Highly overworked, a weakened solar plexus chakra can lead to any number of digestive disorders such as IBS and stomach ulcers along with pain in the area of the lower back.

They are incredibly loyal and authentic.

If you have an empath in your life then you don’t need to worry about whether or not this person can be trusted. They know who they are and they embrace this reality which allows them to be unapologetically ‘themselves’ in all areas of their life. You never have to question whether the person before you is actually who they say that they are because you know that they are.

They are overwhelmed by crowds and public gatherings.

The ability of Empaths to experience the feelings and emotions of those around one isn’t a gift that they are able to control. When they spend time in a public situation they can are inundated with the emotions of many people all at once, wearing them down and overwhelming them quickly. It can leave them burnt out and exhausted, retreating to solitude for the opportunity to recharge.
