We’ve all had that one friend that has absolutely no filter – they tell you exactly what they think, how they feel and what they want in any given situation. While this can be frustrating and hard to hear, there are many benefits to having a blunt friend in your life!

Each of us holds an important role in our group of friends, driven by our unique personality traits. Some people are highly compassionate, acting as the caregiver or parental figure, while others may be incredibly practical, helping each of us to keep our feet firmly planted on the ground. Blunt individuals teach us the value of honesty and clarity, living their life without holding back. This often pushes people away, unable to handle the sometimes brutal or harsh truth – However, for those who are able to maintain a friendship with these blunt individuals will have found an incredible companion for life!

Here are 7 reasons why brutally honest people make the best friends:

#1 – They have high moral standards, and they won’t settle for less.

Often blunt people are highly misunderstood due to the fact that they say the things that everyone else is thinking, but no one else wants to say. People assume that they don’t care about others, or even that they enjoy causing drama or hurting others. The truth is that they have extremely high moral standards that they aren’t willing to compromise for anyone. They have a clear understanding of right and wrong, and their blunt, harsh statements are merely their attempt to keep everyone else on track. Once you understand this, you’ll know that your friend has their heart in the right spot, with genuine intentions and a solid moral code.

#2 – They are protective of the people that they love.

Blunt people don’t allow just anyone into their inner circle, but if you’ve found a place in their heart then you can rest assured that they will go to great lengths to take care of you. They can handle someone insulting or disrespecting them to a degree, they won’t tolerate it, but they aren’t going to let it control their thoughts and feelings. However, if they hear someone talking crap about the people they love then watch out. This will trigger their protective instincts, fighting to defend those that they care about most.

#3 – They will ensure that you always know exactly where you stand.

If you have ever had someone in your life that has faked a connection, then you know how hurtful it can be to discover that you so-called friend has lied to in that way. This is a major betrayal, but not one that you have to worry about if you have a blunt friend. They are very clear about where they stand at any given time. If they are happy, you’ll know it, however, at the same time, if you anger them or upset them, be prepared for them to make it very clear.

#4 – They always tell you the truth, even when it’s difficult.

Honestly is a key building block to a lasting friendship, but this isn’t always easy. In fact, we often find ourselves giving into little white lies simply to avoid the uncomfortable conversations or hurt feelings that the truth may bring. However, the truth always comes out and when it does, even the smallest of white lies can leave you questioning your trust in a friend. This isn’t something you have to worry about with a blunt friend. They are going to tell you the truth, even when it’s hard because that’s just what they do. Don’t expect them to sugar coat it!

#5 – They are a ton of fun to be around.

A blunt friend won’t hold back on telling you exactly how they feel, but that’s not the only thing they don’t hold back on. They are determined to enjoy all that life has to offer, and for that reason, they refuse to hold back on anything they think will bring fun and laughter. They are slightly impulsive and incredibly carefree. If you’re heading out for a night on the town with them, be prepared! You never know what adventures may be just around the corner!

#6 – They aren’t afraid to admit when they’ve done something wrong.

In the same way that a blunt person is more than willing to let you know when you’ve done something wrong, they are also pretty quick to admit their own faults. It may be uncomfortable, or it may come at a great personal cost, but they genuinely value honesty above all else. Not only will they admit when they are wrong, they will take responsibility for their actions, apologizing for any way that they have done you wrong.

#7 – They help you to grow into the best version of yourself.

If you are on the journey for self-growth and discovery, then this is this person that you want to have in your corner. Their ability to bluntly tell you what is going on empowers them to share the aspects of your life that you may be blind to, opening your eyes to your biggest weaknesses. They are approaching the situation with an unbiased perspective. If you are truly prepared to grow, keep an open mind and genuinely listen to what they are sharing with you.
