In this day and age, there are tons and tons of dogs who have been abandoned for numerous reasons. Some of these dogs are perfectly fine overall or are able to be rehabilitated and adopted out but not all of them are so fortunate.
In many cases, elderly or sick dogs end up on the streets or in shelters waiting to pass onto the next life. While these dogs would much rather be spending their final days safe, warm, and with someone who loves them many do not get anything close to that which is where this British woman comes into play. Her name is Nicola Coyle, and she loves giving second chances to dogs who are ‘too far gone.’ She set up something known as the ‘Grey Muzzle Canine Hospice Project’ through which she cares for dying dogs that were abandoned.
In her ‘about’ on their Facebook Page as follows is written:
“We provide end of life care for abandoned dogs. We take only dogs that are from UK pounds that have been deemed as having less than six months to live.”
This meaning she takes these sickly or elderly dogs in and allows them to live out the rest of their lives in her care. She provides them with all they need and gives them lots of love as they make their way to the end of the road. This is a very heartbreaking process and not something everyone can handle.
She has been doing this for quite some time now and has even gained support from others who are following in her footsteps to do similar things. Since she is retired, she has plenty of time to spend with these cuties, and so she can provide them with all the care that they need. Some of these dogs had loving families once upon a time and others may have never known a loving hand until they reached Nicola.
According to ABC News, she even creates a bucket list for each dog that comes into her home, helping them to truly make the most of their time left on this Earth. This bucket list always includes a steak dinner at the local pub and even a trip to see the seaside. Nicola comes up with a proper birthday for each of them, and they all get to celebrate full force.
Nicola told Animal Channel as follows in regards to her work:
“It can be an utterly heartbreaking job, but someone has to do it”
“I’m a complete animal lover and I can’t bear the thought of them spending their final days, weeks, or months without the love they deserve.”
“It can be really tough, but ultimately it’s so rewarding when you can make those times special.”
What do you think of this and could something like this be a fit for you? With shelters across the globe overflowing fostering on this level might be something many of us need to consider. As a fellow animal lover, I truly adore all Nicola is doing and will continue to do.
