There are a few schools of thought on the missing letter effect. One of them is that the letter you use to finish the word depends on the word you are most familiar with. So, it could be that we will finish the word to make it match a word that comes to mind first.
Another school of thought says that the word you finish is a word that reflects what is going on within your subconscious. To me, this school of thought makes the most sense, because much like an inkblot or visual illusion, our brain doesn’t just come up with words and thoughts out of nowhere.
