The upcoming Great American Eclipse on April 8 has, unsurprisingly, become a magnet for wild conspiracy theories. One such theory centers on the European Organization for Nuclear Research, commonly known as CERN, and its Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle collider in the world.

Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, the LHC’s operation on April 8 is part of its regular schedule of experiments, with no link to the solar eclipse visible in North America. Conspiracy theorists, however, are buzzing on social media, trying to connect CERN’s activities with the eclipse, albeit without any logical basis.

One peculiar claim ties CERN to Aleister Crowley, an English occultist who allegedly contacted a demon named Aiwass on April 8, 1904. The theory suggests CERN might be attempting a similar contact during the eclipse—an idea that falls apart considering the LHC’s deep underground location in Europe, far from the eclipse’s path in North America.

The LHC, a 27-kilometer (16.7-mile) ring of superconducting magnets buried under the Swiss-French border, accelerates particles to near-light speed before colliding them. These collisions offer scientists glimpses into the universe’s fundamental particles, including the discovery of the Higgs boson, sometimes called the “God particle,” a term that irks many physicists.

Over 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles) away, the eclipse will have no effect on the LHC’s groundbreaking work in uncovering the mysteries of the physical universe.

CERN, a hub for some of the most significant physics discoveries, is often the subject of fantastical conspiracy theories, possibly due to the complex and esoteric nature of its research. Themes of parallel universes and other dimensions frequently emerge, reflecting a misunderstanding of the scientific work conducted there.

One often-cited piece of “evidence” for sinister activities is a statue of Shiva, the Hindu deity, located outside CERN’s facility in Meyrin. Conspiracy theorists claim it symbolizes dark intentions, ignoring the statue’s real significance. Gifted by India, the statue celebrates the country’s long-standing relationship with CERN. It depicts Lord Shiva performing the Nataraj dance, representing the cycle of creation and destruction, a metaphor for the dynamic world of particle physics, rather than any malevolent undertakings.

In essence, the connections drawn between CERN’s experiments and the solar eclipse are unfounded, illustrating how easily scientific endeavors can be misconstrued by those looking for intrigue in the unknown.
