On May 29, 2021, there will be the closest visible conjunction of Mercury and Venus until November 5, 2033. No matter where you live, you can watch for the planetary pair low in the Western sky at dusk.
Look for Venus, the brighter of the two, to be visible to the naked eye 30 to 40 minutes after sunset. You will most likely need a telescope or some form of optical aid to see the planets together. Because Mercury is exhibiting a thin waning crescent phase right now it appears much dimmer now than at the beginning of the month.
Although the exact moment of the conjunction will occur on May 29, the planets will be close to each other on both the 28 and the 29, so you can try to see them on both dates. The easiest way to locate the planets is by using the stargazing app Star Walk 2. Tap on the magnifier icon in the lower-left corner of the screen, type Venus or mercury and tap the corresponding search result. You will then see the exact location of the planet in the night sky. Point your phone to the sky and follow the white arrow to find your chosen planet.
