A lot of us who are now adults grew up in a time in which we were raised pretty harshly at times. Self-esteem has not always been understood as fundamental to our mental health, but now that psychologists are figuring that out, we are realizing how important it is to have healthy self-esteem.

Self-esteem is the way that we regard ourselves. Without it, we will lack confidence, we will doubt our ability to succeed, and we will continue to treat ourselves in a way that is counterproductive to our well-being. Thankfully, even if you have low self-esteem, there are many ways that you can boost your self-esteem. Below, I will go over 7 of the best way to find healthy self-esteem, so you can begin leading a better life.

1. List your accomplishments.

Sometimes, you need to remind yourself of what you are capable of, especially in the face of negative thoughts. If you find that you are feeling down, write down a list of what you have accomplished. You might not even realize how amazing you are- because your negative thoughts have become so second nature that you don’t even see them sabotaging your happiness.

2. Master a new skill.

It might sound odd, but when you learn something new, you find new trust in yourself. It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, but I highly suggest doing something that challenges you. Just make sure that it is realistic.

3. Get clear on your values.

Think about different values and understand which ones matter most to you. If you aren’t aligned with your values, you can shatter your own sense of self, without meaning to. So, it might be time to make changes.

4. Reach outside your comfort zone.

Your comfort zone is the death of success. However, we are hard-wired to stay there, so it takes discipline to get out of it. Think about one thing you’ve always wanted to do- and make a plan to do it.

5. Engage with motivational content.

Inspirational books, videos, and movies can help you to align with your higher self. Find something that appeals to you and your circumstances, and spend time listening to the message. This can easily help you to feel more positive about yourself.

6. Let go of people who drag you down.

If you have people in your life that tear you down-let go of them. At the very least, limit your time with them. These people will only drag you down and destroy your self-esteem.

7. Set boundaries.

If you have always struggled with setting boundaries, it’s time to overcome that. Start small, by saying no when you are at your limit when you really want to people please and say yes. It will not be easy at first, but the more you assert your own limits, the easier it will get.
