While we tend to spend a lot of our time alone, we also seem to get a lot of negative attention for doing-so. For whatever reason, most people seem to think that if we’re not surrounded by friends and family we’re ‘unhappy’ but that’s just not always the case.

As someone who enjoys being alone I have throughout the years came to understand that being alone has a lot of perks as well as advantages. Sure, we will always want to be around people from time to time but that doesn’t mean our lives should revolve around interactions with others. The following things are some of the many good things about spending time alone that I have come to truly enjoy in my life. How many of these are you able to indulge in?

7 Reasons Why Being Alone Isn’t Always A Bad Thing:

1. There is no one to get on your nerves or upset you.

When you’re on your own you don’t have to answer to anyone and no one is around to upset you. When we live on our own we do not give others the chance to upset us on a daily basis as would happen in a cohabiting situation. Sure, you might want someone to talk to here and there but overall you’re able to relax on a much deeper level.

2. You never have to explain or justify anything to anyone.

Being alone gives you the chance to really be yourself. Y0u are free to say or do whatever you’d like in your own space. You don’t have to justify why you just sat on your couch and ate a whole tub of ice cream. You can just go for whatever it is you see fit.

3. You are free to actually enjoy yourself.

You don’t have to wait for other people to get ready or take anyone anywhere when you’re alone. You are free to do what you want to do and that includes having fun. If you want to stay out all night, you can and if you want to sit at home swimming in your pool for hours on end, no one will be able to stop you.

4. You don’t have to take care of anyone else when you’re alone.

When you’re alone you are only responsible for yourself. You don’t have to spend all your time thinking about other people or focusing on the needs of those around you. If you want to go on a vacation in the spur of the moment you don’t have to consider the feelings or schedules of anyone but yourself.

5. You can be productive and without distraction.

Being alone gives us the chance to get what we have to do done without dealing with someone interrupting us or trying to pry us away from what we’re working on. We aren’t distracted in the same ways we would be if we were surrounded by others and for many, that is a great thing. This allows you to separate work time and playtime right down the middle.

6. You get to make all of the decisions and really do whatever it is you want.

As someone who is alone most of the time, I take pride in being able to make my own decisions. Living a very independent life is not for everyone but for those who choose it, it is quite freeing. You don’t have to ask someone how they feel about the things you’re thinking about doing, you just do them.

7. You don’t have to keep anyone else happy.

When you’re on your own you don’t have to worry about anyone’s needs or wants outside of your own within reason. You get to make yourself happy and push forward in the ways you see fit. Growth is all based on how you choose to move forth and your life becomes the life you’ve chosen to live rather than the life someone else has chosen for you.
