Highly sensitive people are a lot more common than you might think. While you might not notice them, they are everywhere.

Being a highly sensitive person is not as simple or as easy to face as most people make it out to be. It comes with a lot of rough patches and hard to face problems. For those who do not know highly sensitive people are people who are easily overwhelmed by stimuli. They might get stressed by strong smells or unable to deal with loud noises. That being said, they always figure out ways to get things done regardless.

Below I am going to go over some of the best tips that HSP can follow to be able to function as ‘normally’ as possible. While some of these are going to be things you already do not all of them will. Each tip serves its own purpose and can make a huge difference in the life of someone who is a highly sensitive individual.

12 Important Tips For The Highly Sensitive Individual:

1. When in doubt headphones out.

When you are out and about and something is beginning to bother you pull your headphones out and put them to use. Take your mind off of whatever is bothering you and relax. While this isn’t always going to work it will help in most situations as they begin building.

2. Take time to recharge daily.

We all need time to recharge, HSP especially. Give yourself a few extra moments when you need them. They really do make a difference.

3. Be optimistic as often as possible.

Being optimistic can really help you in most situations. While it isn’t going to change everything or make everything better it is important. Optimism allows you to still take that leap even when you are feeling as if you are going to fall.

4. Give yourself time, plan in advance.

Plan things in advance so you have more time to prepare. This will help you be more ‘ready’ and make you feel a lot better. Giving yourself the right amount of time will make a huge difference.

5. Do your best to get the right amount of sleep.

Sleep is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. If you aren’t getting enough or you are getting too much it will impact you. Make sure you are doing what is best for your body.

6. Treat yourself compassionately.

You wouldn’t lash out at others so don’t lash out at yourself. Treat yourself with compassion. Everyone had their own problems and you are not excluded in that.

7. Don’t hesitate to place boundaries.

Boundaries are important and setting healthy boundaries for yourself and the people around you can really help out.

8. Listen to your body.

If your body is telling you that you are beginning to get overwhelmed remove yourself from the situation. Don’t force yourself through something that is going to break you. Sometimes knowing when to step back is crucial.

9. Get things done when it is easier for you.

If going to Walmart at 2 am when the store is not packed to get your groceries is better for you, go for it. Do things when they are easier for you. You matter more than you realize.

10. Meditate as often as possible.

Meditation is something you can really benefit from. It allows you to really let go of whatever is bothering you be it in the moment or later in the day. I meditate several times a day and it really makes a huge difference in my life.

11. Learn to process as best you can.

Learning how to better process things might seem impossible but even the smallest step will make a huge difference. Try your best and see where you end up. Any progress is better than no progress.

12. Spend time in nature.

Being in nature will allow you to decompress much quicker. Spend time in nature with friends or alone. You would be surprised at how beneficial a walk through the park at night can be.
