If you think you’ve seen ‘everything’ now is the time to think again. This kayaker recently went on a trip with some friends and ended up with much more than he had bargained for.
Kyle Mulinder was kayaking with some buddies off a coast in New Zealand. Everything was going great and the group was having a lot of fun until something very unexpected happened. Something that they just so happened to catch on camera.
A seal came straight up out of the water and smacked him in the face with an octopus. Yes, an octopus was being used as a weapon by a seal. This seal seemed to have perfect aim as it was able to smack him right in the face. One of Kyle’s friends posted the video of this whole ordeal, to begin with, and when Kyle shared it on his Instagram he received quite the response.
His caption read as follows:
Wrong place, right time. 😂 Yes, I got slapped in the face with an octopus by the seal! I know crazy right. Here’s the story. Last weekend I was out testing the new #GoProHero7 with @kaikourakayaks and my mate @taiyomasuda. After a fun paddle around the peninsula catching waves we spotted a giant male seal fighting an octopus. Before we knew it the fight came to us and well the rest is slap to the face 😂 I’m not sure who got more of a surprise the seal, the octopus or me. Either way the octopus held onto the bottom of kayak for some time before our guide was able to get it off with his paddle then it swam away to fight another day. True story.
As you will see during the initial few seconds of Kyle realizing what had happened, he exclaims time and time again that there is an octopus on his boat. Not fully understanding even then the full extent of how crazy it truly was. While many people encounter seals in the area none are quite as intense as this one.
That being said, while we would love to believe the seal was just smacking him in the face for no reason it probably didn’t realize it was going to smack him at all. You see, seals eat things like octopus’ and other things of the sort. Sometimes the fight is quite rough. Kyle just somehow ended up right in the midst of all of that as you will see below.
When it comes to a meal like this the seal will go to great lengths. They really enjoy octopus and it is a staple; however, this time the octopus managed to survive. It was removed from the boat and left seemingly healthy. For more of a run through on this whole ordeal feel free to check out the video below.
