Each year, we experience different seasons, which are marked by quarters: there is a Summer and Winter solstice and a Spring and Autumn Equinox. And while these dates do serve to mark the seasons, they are also energetically empowered portals that push us through different levels along our journey.
The Autumn equinox of 2022 will happen on September 21 at 10 am PDT. During the equinoxes, we have equal parts of day and night, which is thought to bring us back to equilibrium. It’s a time to recalibrate, and it’s also a fresh start that is offered by the universe.
Just a few days after the equinox, the Sun will enter into Libra, marking the beginning of Libra season, which is ironic, because Libra is also all about balance. Due to these two events coinciding, you will likely feel yourself trying to realign and reach equilibrium. Embrace that urge, and make sure that you are prioritizing the load that you are carrying and that you let go of what is no longer serving you or what is toxic in your life. Conversely, if there is something in your life that you are not giving enough of your time and energy to (that is worthy of it) it’s time to make that shift.
Oftentimes, we focus too much on the things that don’t matter and not enough on the things that do, and this equinox is pushing you to transcend and finally find the balance that is necessary for your life.
For quite some time, spiritual traditions as old as civilization itself and perhaps much older have known and realized the power of the equinox. Ancient pagans, druids, shamans, and Native American tribes marked their calendars using the seasonal quarters and cross quarters of the year, not only for survival but also for spiritual growth.
Of course, there is a good reason for this, because much like the seasons and phases found in the surrounding natural world, we humans also go through similar transformations during these times.
Depending on the hemisphere, the equinox means different things. For those in the North, this will be a time in which the leaves begin to turn, pushing us closer towards winter and the ending cycle for many natural ecosystems on our planet. On the other hand, those in the South will begin to see spring forward and into full swing, much like springtime for us Northerners.
Over the past few months, we have experienced various retrogrades and with the seasons changing, it’s very much normal to feel a bit out of balance. After a long hot Summer (at least for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere), even our planet needs a transitional period and needs to achieve a balance. We aren’t that much different and that is what that energy is all about: finding harmony once more with ourselves, each other, our lives, and our paths.
This energetic portal is highly useful to mark a fresh start in your life, to try something new, to completely change your routine, whatever it is that you need right now, I suggest touching base with yourself and figuring out what is needed most to bring you that harmony.
Another layer of this equinox pushes us to find a balance between the light and the dark. All of us have light and dark within us, and when we are too ‘sunshine and rainbows’ or too ‘abysmal’ we can get pushed too far, which ultimately causes detrimental shifts in our vibration. For example, when you focus too much on being positive and never face the darkness in your life, you will become jaded, grow to be naive, and in many cases repress the darkness until it takes you over. On the contrary, if you are too dark, focusing too heavily on everything bad, you will get lost in that place, and it can be hard to escape. Now, it’s time to recalibrate.
Take this time to tune into you. Shut off your phone, sit outside in the quiet, and get to know yourself. Allow your thoughts to surface, don’t judge them, and don’t do anything with them. Simply notice them, be aware of them, and allow them to pass. Think of the things going on in your life and compare them to the changing seasons. Contemplate how you can bring more balance and harmony into your life- and what you will have to push harder for and what you will have to let go of.
