For some reason, we tend to allow toxic or negative people to hold far more power over our lives than we should. We let them think they know what’s best for us when they just don’t and it needs to stop.

If we never take the initiative to live our own lives we’re going to be miserable forever. While negative people can be just about anything coming to terms with the fact that you owe them nothing could truly change your life. Whether you’re dealing with toxic parents, an abusive significant other, or something else entirely you need to be willing to take your power back.

Your life is yours to live and if you keep letting other people make your decisions and push you down paths you don’t want to go down, you’ll be unhappy forever. Happiness is found within not in other people and you’re not going to be living the life you want if you’re allowing someone else to live theirs through you. Below are some tips that will help you take back control, and they are well worth applying to your life.

Be the person you want to be and live the life you want to live. Things are not always what they seem and people don’t always have good intentions. Life each day for yourself not for someone else.

7 Ways To Stop Allowing Negative People So Much Power In Your Life:

1. Cut ties with people who are always using you.

While it might be hard cutting ties with those who are using you doing-so is important. Those people don’t actually care about you and don’t deserve your time or efforts. They are only around because they think they can pressure you into doing more and more for them.

2. Stop doing things you don’t want to do.

If you don’t want to do something, don’t do it. Stop being so willing to give of yourself to those who refuse to do the same in return. You deserve to enjoy the things you have while you have them, period.

3. Quit going out of your way to prove others wrong and just live your life.

While it might feel great getting something over on someone else, it’s a waste of time. You don’t have to prove yourself to anyone but yourself and that’s that. You’re only pushing yourself further behind by trying to prove yourself to people who will never see you as you are, to begin with.

4. Quit letting yourself feel like you have to say ‘yes’ to certain people all the time.

You don’t have to agree to everything just because of whom it’s coming from. If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it, period. You don’t owe anyone anything in this life. Stop letting other people hold things over your head, no means no.

5. Figure out what you want in life and where you want to be.

Once you figure out what you want in life and where you want to be you can work towards that. Through this, you can figure out what is serving you and what is not. While it might be a bit confusing at first this sets the mood for a lot of change in your life.

6. Stop taking responsibility for the emotions of others.

You are only responsible for your own emotions, no one else’s. If someone is upset at seeing you do well, that’s on them. You are not responsible for the way other people feel.

7. Let go of the past as best you can.

Don’t hold onto the past. The past is not something we can change and as time passes it will hold bring us down more and more if we give it power. The future is where you should be looking above all else.
