Sadly, in this world, there are tons of people who will go out of their way to take advantage of the people around them. Whether they’re friends, family members, or otherwise they can sometimes be hard to deal with.

When we are younger, it’s harder to break from this kind of thing, but as we move into adulthood, making sure you’re not doing too much for people who refuse to give anything in return is important. At the end of the day, you can only do so much for other people. If they will not help themselves, you’re doing no more than wasting your time and effort.

At some point, we all have to come to terms with the fact that some people just want to gain all they can from us and don’t actually care about us like they might say they do. Below, I am going to go over some of the things that we can all do to help keep users at bay. These things will allow you to take power back in your own life and keep things as they should be.

7 Ways To Stop Letting Others Take Advantage Of You:

1. Stop working so hard to please others.

You don’t have to try so hard to make other people happy. At the end of the day, you’re only responsible for your own happiness, and that’s it. The more you try to make everyone else happy, the more unhappy you’re likely going to become.

2. Weigh things out properly and figure out who does their part and who does not.

If someone is not helping you in the ways you’re helping them, it will stand out in your mind. Really think about the people in your life and how your connections play out. Do these people really benefit you in the ways you benefit them?

3. Don’t let your needs fall through the cracks.

Keep your own needs in mind moving forth. You above all else need to make sure you’re taken care of properly. If doing something for someone else puts you behind, don’t do it.

4. Remember that you need personal space.

We all need personal space, and boundaries are important. Stop letting people walk all over you. If you need distance, put that distance forth, period.

5. Know when to say ‘no.’

You don’t have to agree to do so much for other people. There is nothing wrong with saying no when you need to. If you are not interested in something turn it down, it’s not going to be the end of the world, I promise.

6. Don’t let people guilt trip you into things.

There are people in this world who will try to turn everything they’ve ever done for you against you. Those people do not ask for equal things in return, but greater. Don’t let people force you to do things you know are going to put you behind. Sure, being kind and doing things for one another is great, but this has limits.

7. Remember, you do not owe anyone anything.

At the end of the day, you do not owe anyone anything. You are your own person, and so is everyone else. If you don’t want to do something for someone, don’t do it. You are the only person who can make your decisions.
