September’s full moon will be one of the last supermoons of 2024 as the year transitions into the fall season. Known as the Harvest Moon or Corn Moon, this full moon will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse visible across the United States, including in Texas, where the night skies are especially clear and bright.

While the Farmer’s Almanac is often credited with naming the full moons, the publication actually draws these names from Native American, colonial American, and other traditional North American groups. Although some names have faded from regular use, others remain popular, with many being English interpretations of Native languages.

What is the Harvest Moon?

The September 2024 full moon, commonly called the Harvest Moon and sometimes the Corn Moon, will reach peak brightness at 2:34 a.m. UTC. For those in Texas, particularly in San Antonio, this will happen at 9:34 p.m. Central Time on September 17, as per the Farmer’s Almanac.

The Harvest Moon stands out because it’s tied to the autumnal equinox rather than a specific month. This year, the fall equinox occurs on September 22, marking the official start of the season. At this time, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, leading to shorter days and earlier nights.

Typically, there are 12 full moons each year, but occasionally, a 13th moon, known as a blue moon, occurs. This happens when there are two full moons within a single month. In August 2024, a rare super blue moon graced the skies, categorized as a seasonal blue moon, which occurs when a season has four full moons instead of the usual three. The next blue moon won’t appear until May 31, 2026.

Interestingly, the term “blue moon” doesn’t indicate the moon’s color. However, NASA explains that on rare occasions, dust or smoke particles in the atmosphere can scatter red light, giving the moon a blue hue.

What is a Supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the Moon is closest to Earth, making it appear larger and brighter. NASA compares the visual difference to that between a quarter and a nickel. The September Harvest Moon will also be a supermoon, following August’s supermoon and preceding those in October and November. The closest supermoon of 2024 is expected on October 17 at 6:26 a.m.

When is the Lunar Eclipse on September 17?

According to NASA, the lunar eclipse will be visible across three-quarters of Texas, including San Antonio and areas eastward.

The penumbral eclipse begins at 7:41 p.m. Central Time on September 17, as Earth’s shadow touches the moon. The partial eclipse, where the moon may appear red, will start at 9:12 p.m., reaching its maximum at 9:44 p.m. The eclipse ends with the partial phase at 10:15 p.m. and the penumbral phase concluding at 11:47 p.m.
