We all love chips be it on a daily basis or on rare occasions. When it comes to which ones we should be eating we tend to go with the ones that look and are somewhat marketed as more healthy, right?
Frito-Lay markets SunChips as a better snack for us all, one that is rich in whole grains, right? While they claim the low amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats will benefit our heart health they don’t mention how damning these chips truly are. With every ‘good’ thing we find in this day and age there is always something we are not being told.
I actually recently came across a post by GMOFreeUSA that showed the results they were able to obtain by testing these chips and their findings were nowhere near what I had expected. When they sent a sample of these SunChips into a certified lab to test them for the presence of GMO material and Glyphosate the tests came back positive for both.
They wrote as follows in regards to the results and presence of GMOs:
The quantitative PCR test verified, by DNA analysis, that 100% of the corn in the SunChips was GMO, containing DNA sequences known to be present in insecticide-producing Bt and Roundup Ready corn. The corn in SunChips produces insecticides from inside every cell of the plant that can’t be washed off and is regulated by the EPA. The FDA, EPA, and USDA allowed the insecticidal GMO corn discovered in SunChips to be commercialized without ever conducting human safety tests.
An in-vitro study found that the insecticides in this corn may be toxic to human cells. Feeding studies conducted on mammals found adverse effects including immune system disturbances, blood biochemistry disturbances, male reproductive organ damage, disturbances in the functioning of the digestive system and signs of organ toxicity. Industry claims that these insecticidal proteins are broken down in the digestive tract, yet a study found the proteins circulating in the blood of pregnant and non-pregnant women and the blood supply to fetuses. For more details about the potential impact of Bt and glyphosate on human health, read our full Kellogg’s Froot Loops Report.
As if that wasn’t enough, the presence of glyphosate is more than a good reason to avoid these chips altogether. There is a mounting body of evidence that continues to grow in regards to the damning effects glyphosate can and does have on our bodies.
While I know this might seem a bit over the top it is still something we all need to be aware of. In this day and age, everything marketed to us as healthy should be looked at with caution just because it isn’t as bad as some of the other products on the market doesn’t mean it comes risk-free.
