The word ‘authentic’ sure does get thrown around a lot these days, but what does the phrase actually mean? If you could define authenticity in a person, what would you say?
To me, an authentic person is someone who knows who they are and does not try to be anything else. They are comfortable with themselves and face who they are with open arms, instead of trying to run. The fact of the matter is, that most people who say they are authentic aren’t, because, at the end of the day, a truly authentic person doesn’t go out of their way to be authentic, they simply are.
“The Authenticity Project” by Clare Pooley
This novel explores the idea of authenticity in a captivating way. The story revolves around a notebook passed between strangers, each sharing their true selves within its pages. It’s a heartwarming tale that demonstrates the power and importance of being genuine and authentic.
With that being said, here are 10 traits of a truly authentic person.
1. They are self-aware.
A truly authentic person is aware of themselves. Not just the parts of themselves that they like, but also their darker parts are embraced by them as part of the whole. Rather than trying to fight their darker parts, they accept ALL of themselves and try to work through their demons.
2. They don’t have to buy things to define them.
An authentic person does not put on the air. They don’t pretend to be something they are not. And they don’t care about material gains and objects. When it comes down to it, what impresses them and what impresses others about them is their authenticity.
3. They embrace their flaws.
Authentic people know their flaws. They don’t try to cover them. Instead, they are quite open about them and tend to laugh at themselves.
4. They are unique.
If you meet someone who is genuinely authentic, they will have a way about them that is authentic to them. Everything about them will simply scream a vibe all of its own. When it comes down to it, they let their freak flag fly high.
“Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead” by Brené Brown
Brené Brown’s work is pivotal in understanding vulnerability, which is closely tied to authenticity. This book delves into the courage it takes to be vulnerable and authentic in various aspects of life, including personal relationships and professional environments. It offers practical advice for embracing vulnerability as a strength.
5. They treat people with respect.
Authentic people treat others with respect. They don’t talk down to others or gossip. And they won’t use or abuse you.
6. They are blunt.
An authentic person is going to be real with you. Even if you don’t want to hear it- they will tell you the truth about whatever it is you are going through. Sometimes, they may be called rude, or brash, when in reality – they just keep it real.
7. They don’t judge.
Authentic people do not judge. They know that we each have our own way, and they know that at any given time, they could end up on the other side of where they are now. They stay humble and have an open heart for others.
8. They have character.
If you’ve ever met an authentic person, it’s likely something about them seemed to stand above the rest. They have true character and integrity. They don’t just talk about how many characters they have – instead they live it.
9. They have genuine compassion.
A truly authentic person is compassionate. They have an open heart for other people, animals, etc. They have genuine compassion for all others, no matter what the situation.
10. They are consistent.
Perhaps the most important aspect of the authentic person is they are consistent. They don’t fall back on behaviors that don’t align with their values. They don’t change their stripes depending on who they are around. They are always the same person, no matter what.
