People are strange. There is no denying this fact. And perhaps one of the strangest things to me about humanity is how invested we are in other people’s business.
There seems to no longer be a line drawn in the sand between what is and what isn’t our business. Everything we say, do, think, and don’t think is pretty much open territory to the public with social media. With little effort, we can access people’s arrest records, photographs, and all of the little thoughts that cross their minds.
And while this can have its perks, it can also be extremely frustrating. You may post a picture of your child, only to be met with five moms who noticed one minor detail in the photographs that they believe indicates that you aren’t a good enough mother.
But, when it comes down to it, no matter how accessible you are, you don’t owe anyone an explanation for certain things going on in your life. Here are 10 things you do not owe anyone an explanation for.
1. Your dietary habits.
The foods that you choose to nourish your body with are no one’s business but your own. Everyone has different needs and preferences when it comes to their diet, and there are many variations of a healthy diet. While something might work wonderfully for one person, the same diet may not work for someone else. Listen to your body, do your research and consult your doctor. But, don’t worry about explaining these choices to anyone that you don’t care to.
2. Your religious beliefs.
You do not owe anyone an explanation for your religious beliefs. There are a million different paths in this world that you can take, and each of them provides some benefit to those who follow them. No matter who it is- you do NOT owe ANYONE an explanation about what you choose to believe.
3. Your political beliefs.
You do not have to explain your political beliefs to anyone else. First of all, they aren’t going to listen, because they already have their own beliefs. Unless they are open-minded. But, even if they are, if you don’t want to explain yourself, don’t. You have reached your conclusions and have every right to.
4. What you do with your own body.
Anything that concerns your body is your business, no one else’s. This means that whatever you choose to do with that body, as long as you are not using it to harm others, then it’s no one’s business but your own.
5. Your financial choices.
You don’t owe anyone an explanation for how you spend, save and earn money. If someone has a rude remark to make about how you handle your finances, you have every right to tell them to mind their own business. Finances are personal, and unless you want to include someone in your financial choices, they should stay that way.
6. Your sexuality.
Sexuality is also very personal. As long as you don’t hurt others or do anything that is not consensual, your sexuality is your business. You do not owe anyone an explanation about what you choose to do with your body on a sexual level.
7. For your appearance.
Our style is unique to us and an expression of ourselves. Regardless of how you express yourself in your appearance, you don’t owe anyone an explanation.
8. Your career.
Everyone has their path in life, and no matter how much overlap we may display at times, our path is unique to us. You do not owe anyone an explanation about the path that you choose.
9. Deciding to take some time to yourself.
Sometimes, as human beings, we need alone time. When you choose to take time to yourself, that is your business. Anyone who demands an explanation for why you needed some alone time is likely not someone you should keep in your life.
10. Your priorities.
Everyone has their priorities. Some people prefer to focus on their career as their main priority, while others choose to build a family. No matter what your priorities are, they are none of anyone else’s business.
