It’s a common misconception that depression is a ‘one-size fits all’ disease that everyone experiences the same. Actually, depression comes in many forms, making it difficult to truly spot for many.

Depression is very complex and so it feels different for everyone. Some people assume that they are facing something completely different or underplay their suffering entirely. Some people don’t realize that what they are going through is as intense as it is, they think that perhaps other people are feeling this way as well or that there is something wrong with them, but they aren’t quite sure what. To have depression, especially a severe case and not even truly understand what you’re facing in the slightest is a terrifying thing.

Below I am going to go over some of the more common signs that you might be facing depression whether you have identified it or not. Depression affects millions of people each year, day in and day out. Not all of the people with depression are going to actually seek help and that results in a lot more suffering. If you’re going through something, don’t be afraid to open up about it. No struggle is too small, so if you hurt, your hurt is real, so don’t downplay it.

10 Signs You’re Going Through Depression Without Realizing It:

1. You have literally no self-esteem.

You might have thought of yourself highly before all of this but since you have been feeling differently you really don’t see yourself the same anymore. Your mind is always tearing you down in different ways. Your self-esteem is non-existent.

2. You struggle with concentrating and your memory kind of sucks.

You are not always able to really concentrate. You go through days or weeks on end that are hard for you to focus. During this time your memory goes to shit as well. You are constantly forgetting things.

3. You always feel exhausted and down in the dumps.

No matter how much rest you get, you still feel exhausted. It’s like no matter what you’re always behind and upset. The more you try the worse things get.

4. Nothing seems to bring you any pleasure.

You feel like even the things you used to love to do and people you used to love to see are not bringing you happiness anymore. You don’t get excited about going to do things. Sometimes, you might not feel much at all.

5. You constantly dwell on past mistakes and things of the sort.

You are always overthinking things and making yourself feel even worse. You let your mind get you down big time, and you feel like there is nothing you can do about it. This might last for a little while or for a long while but until now you’ve always just dealt with it.

6. You either sleep all the time or can’t sleep at all.

Now, this one varies depending on the person. You either can’t seem to get any sleep and sit in bed doing literally nothing a lot, or you sleep to the point where most people wonder if you’re alright. Either way, you probably struggle to force yourself up.

7. You are sometimes extremely moody.

You go through spells of extreme moodiness. It’s like everything gets you upset, and you can go from pissed to crying in a matter of seconds. Your moodiness can affect just you or even those around you depending on the situation.

8. You notice intense weight changing.

You might have a change in appetite and either eat more or less. When this happens you either gain weight or lose it. This can really bring us down if it is partnered with sign number one.

9. You physically hurt and have unexplainable aches and pains.

Depression also manifests as physical pain. If you’re hurting and can’t figure out why depression could be causing it. This most times comes in the form of back pain or joint pain.

10. You lash out at others for seemingly no reason.

Sometimes you might literally let that moodiness get the best of you and lash out. You attack the people you care about, and you might not even know why you’re doing it. This is a very damning thing to go through and can really affect everyone.
