On July 27th we will have the opportunity to experience the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century, coinciding with the full blood moon, a truly special phenomenon. While this astrological will not be visible to everyone, those in the Eastern hemisphere are fortunate enough to have the perfect vantage point.

When you look up into the night sky at the moon, it’s light is the reflection of the sun’s rays off the moon creating its luminous appearance. Approximately twice each year the Earth will come between the sun and the moon, it’s shadow falling upon the moon for a brief period of time, also known as a lunar eclipse. During this time, the moon will appear a red or orangish color to those that are viewing it. It’s a beautiful sight for all who gaze upon it. It is this reddish color is where the moon earns the name ‘the blood moon.’

The biggest challenge in viewing this phenomenon is often the fact that it is such a brief period of time. Luckily for all of us, the length of this incredible lunar eclipse will make it easier than ever to take in the sight! The actual total lunar eclipse is estimated to last 1 hour and 43 minutes, however, it will begin and end with a partial eclipse phase, which, combined, will last a total of 3 hours and 55 minutes.

The eclipse will begin at approximately 7:30 PM UTC (3:30 PM Eastern), with the peak of the eclipse occurring at approximately 8:22 PM UTC (4:22 PM Eastern). EarthSky recommends finding a location out in the country free from the light pollution created by most cities and urban centers. It is also important to ensure that you have a clear view of the sky, unobstructed by larger objects like trees or tall buildings. With the late timing of this phenomenon, it may be the perfect opportunity for an overnight camp out!

Adding to the excitement, just days later on July 31st Mars will pass by us at its closest point to earth since 2003. This is a perfect opportunity to catch sight of the great red planet, as it will be more visible than ever.
