We’ve often heard discussions about what many believe to be the extreme lengths that American women go to in order to live up to our countries beauty standards, with pictures and videos on social media sharing the surprising transformations that they can accomplish using just makeup. However, a recent viral video reveals that Asians women are taking their ‘makeup transformations’ to a whole new level!
The love for makeup and beauty is a major industry here in the United States, with the leading beauty manufacturer globally, L’Oréal, generating an estimated $28.6 billion! This popularity has grown exponentially in recent years with the large number of beauty bloggers, vlogger and social media influencers sharing their favorite products, tips and tricks, and tutorials on how to achieve their surprising transformations. It was estimated that nearly half of the beauty related videos uploaded to YouTube are tutorials, teaching viewers different techniques or styles.
It would be easy to assume that the United States is dominating the world of cosmetics with our rigid beauty standards and obsession with perfection, but you would be mistaken. In fact, North Americans account for only 25% of the global cosmetic market, with the Asian market dominating at 37%.
A recent video that went viral across YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms revealed the incredible lengths that women in different parts of Asia will go to in order to create their ‘ideal look’. While Americans are using contour and highlighting tricks in an attempt to create the illusion of a different facial structure, these Asian women are seen removing fake skin extensions used in order to achieve the impossible beauty expectations that they face. This ‘fake skin’ has the ability to actually alter the shape of their face, depicted in the video as a means of creating slender poreless, doll-like faces.
This ‘doll-like’ look isn’t new. In fact, the quest for a ‘porcelain’ appearance has recently been criticized in the cosmetic industry today, with some companies even selling skin lightening products to achieve this end goal. Our desire for perfection has gone so far, that perfection in beauty is no longer real.
With the popularity of photoshop and these shocking extremes that women will go to cosmetically, it is no wonder that so many women struggle with self-confidence and body image issues. Take a look at the incredibly upsetting statistics revealed in ‘The Dove Global Beauty and Confidence Report.’ Interviewing a total of 10,500 females across 13 countries, they discovered that 85% of women and 79% of girls will actually opt out of important life activities because they don’t feel good about how they look. Even more shocking, 87% of women will either stop themselves from eating or otherwise put their health at risk due to being unhappy with how they look. This a serious global problem that needs to be addressed!
