Recently, some very disturbing news came to light in Bristol, UK. According to local officials, dangerous parasites have been found in the water supply.
A diarrhea and vomit-inducing parasite has been discovered in the water supply in Clevedon. Bristol Water has gone so far as to issue a boil water notice for residents living in BS21 and BS49. This boil notice lasted merely a few days but the issue is not dealt with just yet. This parasite is known as cryptosporidium and was luckily discovered during routine testing. This kind of thing can happen ANYWHERE and is something we need to be aware of.
The BristolPost reported as follows on the issue:
The parasite – if consumed – can infect a person’s bowels and cause cryptosporidiosis, which in turn leads to vomiting and watery diarrhea. Children between the ages of one and five, or people with weak immune systems, are particularly vulnerable to the parasite.
Bristol Water’s website states that it seems they found this issue in time as this parasite is not being detected in the homes of anyone from the samples that have been taken thus far. Vulnerable customers were given bottled water during the time that they were having to boil and it seems the company handled things quite well.
While I know most of us are here in the United States, this is something well worth mentioning. Parasites can be found in the most unexpected places. It is our responsibility to do our best to keep from becoming inhabited by them. Contaminated water is a global issue and parasites that can be transferred from person to person through water are in decent numbers. I feel like most of us take our access to ‘clean’ drinking water for granted, we should all be thankful.
Back in May of 2017 the CDC actually warned us not to accidentally drink pool water as there were lots of reports of this same parasite being made. Since 2014 crypto outbreaks have doubled here in the US in pools and water playgrounds alone. Crypto is quick to spread and hard to get rid of.
