Just over one-sixth of the world’s population goes without clean water every single day or around one billion people. 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related issues; 6,000 children every day.
Safe water intervention is the only way to get clean water, what I consider a basic human right, into the hands of the world’s poorest people.
The LifeStraw is a rather simple invention. It’s an about 25 centimeters long plastic pipe filter that typically only costs a couple dollars, though the product’s price is currently under review and a new price will be posted in short order. The LifeStraw converts contaminated water into safe drinking water. It filters out a variety of pathogens, like the incredibly deadly cryptosporidiosis, and parasites, like the painful Guinea worm.
Each straw can filter 700 liters of drinking water effectively, killing diseases that cause diarrhea and other infections such as typhoid, Cholera, and Salmonella.
This simple little device has the opportunity to have a tremendous impact on a human’s life. Through people’s donations, the LifeStraw has the ability to make history.
