Simon Meehan of Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig has been declared BT Young Scientist and Technologist of the Year at an awards ceremony in Dublin’s RDS Just a couple of weeks ago and with good reason. This young man has done what essentially was the ‘impossible.’
Meehan is especially impressive considering he is only 15 years old! This fascinating young man was able to find a non-toxic, organic, and original antibiotic. He did this by analyzing plants that were widely available in his area. He combined botany, analytic chemistry, and microbiology to come up with an antibiotic-resistant bacteria killing miracle.
“People are going deep into the Amazon rainforest looking for new antibiotics. But I’m a 15-year-old boy who found this down his own back garden. That has got to be amazing.”
“I feel, without disrespecting the scientific community too much, that there should be some conclusions from this. We are over-thinking science in too many ways.”
For someone so young he is obviously quite well rounded and has his head on his shoulders properly. He is working on lots of natural things and seems to be more suited for it as well. Who would have thought to look in blackberry leaves for something more?
This young man was able to do things many have been working hard at for years. Many consider his project to be quite exciting. He uses the blackberry leaf and its extract to do so much more than we would have ever thought could be done. These findings were as you most likely assume quite unexpected.
Meehan’s approach to killing bacteria is like nothing we have experienced before. Using a natural plant active ingredient to get things done, who would have guessed? The treatment he has pioneered was literally derived from the natural chemicals found in blackberries, how much more creative can you get?
Meehan also has a very respectful outlook on things like this in general. It is refreshing to see youth in current times doing things in a more natural approach. As we move into an age of more and more technology these alternatives are going to be more and more beneficial in general.
Nature has a lot to offer us and we should be paying more attention to it. Check out the video below to see Meehan in action and learn more about his findings. What do you think about all of this? I for one am in awe! We can only hope more findings like these come about in the future.
