Crohn’s disease is something that affects about 1.6 million Americans and is a lot more serious than most realize. It is something that affects the body by causing inflammation in the digestive tract, it is extremely uncomfortable and can be quite painful.
Crohn’s disease is a form of IBD and it can lead to abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, malnutrition, and severe diarrhea. While it can involve different areas of the digestive tract depending on the person it is never easy to deal with. This is also something that tends to spread deep into layers of affected bowel tissue causing it to be quite debilitating and in some cases, it can be life-threatening.
While we know cannabis works wonders on a lot of things it seems Crohn’s disease might be something to add to the list. A study from 2013 that I recently came across really got me thinking. This study was published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology Hepatology and it illustrates the effects of cannabis on patients suffering from Crohn’s disease. For this study researchers followed 21 patients.
Of those 21 patients (13 men and 8 women with an average age of 40) no one had been successful with any kind of treatments they had tried for their Crohn’s disease. Each patient had tried anti-tumor agents, immunomodulators, and steroidal therapy. These patients were split into two groups one was given rolled up cannabis containing 115 MG of THC and the other was given cannabis without THC.
The results showed that the THC group at least half saw complete remission where-as the other group did not. Out of those who were in the THC group almost everyone even saw their activity index for the disease drop as well. They reported being able to sleep better and being able to eat more, finally. While of course, more research needs to be done on this but it does seem quite promising.
Perhaps in the future Crohn’s disease could be treated with cannabis on a wide scale. What do you think? For more information on this please feel free to check out the video below.
