Life, as we know it, is a roller coaster. One day you can be flying high, accomplishing great things and dominating in every area.

The next, you may find yourself crashing, overwhelmed by the challenges that you face. In between the two, there are moments of joy and sadness, happiness, and disappointment. It keeps us on our toes and constantly guessing, and it’s always changing.

Most of our life is completely within our control, decided by the choices that we make each and every day. In order to truly embrace this, however, we need to realize that there are a few things that we can’t control. These are the harsh truths about life that every one of us needs to learn at some point, however, most don’t discover until it’s too late to do something about it. Learning these valuable lessons early will empower you to make the most of your life. Take note, your ideal life is waiting for you!

Prepare Yourself for These 10 Harsh Truths About Life That Everyone Needs to Learn:

#1 – There is No Such Thing as the Perfect Partner

If you’ve been holding out for finding that perfect someone who has no flaws, and whose life perfectly meshes with your own then don’t hold your breath. As human beings, we are all flawed – that includes yourself. Expecting to find the ‘perfect match’ is an unrealistic expectation that is only going to leave you disappointed. Instead, find someone who makes you happy and love them despite their quirks and their flaws. Grow together and help one another to become the best version of yourselves.

#2 – You Will Regret Not Doing What You Love

It’s often credited as the #1 regret that people have on their death bed, that they didn’t do the one thing in life that they are most passionate about. Money and status are great, but they aren’t worth giving up the things that you love in life. If there is something that you feel fall called to do, follow your heart. Don’t worry about what other people think, or what you feel society demands of your time – neither will matter when you are looking back on your life.

#3 – Don’t Be Too Serious, Have Fun

You’ve likely heard the saying ‘life is a game’ and this couldn’t be more accurate. Far too often we get caught up in the concerns and worries of the world, seeing only the serious side of everything around them. Instead, learn to have fun with life. Do things that make you laugh, learn the rules (but bend them occasionally) and, most importantly, don’t be afraid to play! You’ll never win if you aren’t part of the game in the first place.

#4 – Be A Realist When It Counts

One of the biggest mistakes that many of us make in our lives is to focus too much on the areas of our life with little to no consequence while looking past those that actually hold meaning. There are some things that really do require our attention, demanding that we put on that ‘serious’ hat long enough to manage our responsibilities. Learn to recognize what needs to be done to work towards your goals and dreams. Work smarter, not harder, prioritizing the things that are worthy of your attention today while still making plenty of time for fun.

#5 – Everyone Will Eventually Die

It would be nice to think that we can somehow cheat death and live out our lives with the people we care about, never having to face the pain of losing someone. The truth is that we’re all given only a short window of time here on Earth. Don’t forget this – Make that phone call, spend quality time together and don’t take anyone in your life for granted. You don’t know how long you have left together, make every minute count.

#6 – Everything Ends

People aren’t the only thing that will eventually come to an end in our lives. Nothing in life will last forever, so we need to learn to be grateful for what we have at the moment. Jobs will end, our children will grow up and leave the house, we’ll fall in and out of love, friendships will fade… It’s all part of the experience, but change is inevitable. Appreciate what you have now but be open to the change that is to come tomorrow.

#7 – Most People Are in it For Themselves

While we would all love to see the best in everyone that we meet, believing that they would do anything for us just as we would like to believe that we would do anything for our friends and family, here’s a hard reality to accept: Most people are only worried about one person in this life, themselves. This isn’t to say there aren’t those rare gems out there that genuinely give onto others, but in most cases, you are better off assuming that they are being selfish in everything they do.

#8 – We Give Meaning to Our Own Lives

Don’t sit back and wait for the perfect opportunity to fall into your lap. You ultimately have control of what you do and the legacy that you are leaving behind in this world. If you want to be remembered for making a difference, then step out of your comfort zone and go do just that – make a difference in your community today. Remember that nothing in life has to be extreme to make it valuable. You don’t have to win the Nobel Peace Prize to make a difference, volunteering for a local charity can be just as meaningful if you choose to see your life in that way.

#9 – Embrace the Romance

This doesn’t just refer to the romance in your relationship – Learn to embrace the romance in every area of your life. Stop for a moment, lay down in the grass and just watch the clouds, breath in the scent of the fresh spring flowers, take in the starry night sky. We are surrounded by things that have the power to fill our hearts if only we choose to look at them through eyes of wonder. Embrace your inner child and take everything in.

#10 –  Stop Complaining, Find A Solution

You have the power to solve nearly any situation that you face in life if you simply focus your attention on finding a solution rather than complaining about the fact that you don’t believe the current state to be ‘ideal.’ When you allow yourself to focus on complaining what you are really saying is that you don’t care enough to make it happen. If this is the case, be honest, let it go and move on. Complaints and negativity will only bring your life down.
