In case you haven’t heard, something extremely important will be taking place in the sky on January 31st: the super-blue blood moon! If you are unsure of what that means, then read on.
A blue moon is what takes place when two full moons occur within a calendar month. A ‘blood moon’ is what many uses to explain a lunar eclipse, due to the red-like hue the moon appears to have such an experience. Basically, because the moon is passing into Earth’s shadow, it changes its appearance. Then, to add to this spectacular phenomenon, this one will also be a supermoon! So on top of it being a blue-blood moon, the moon will also be the closest it has been to Earth during a single orbit.
Throughout the time I have studied spirituality of various forms, one of the major things that I have come to understand is the moon’s significance to many spiritual paths. Not only does the moon affect the tides of the ocean, our moods, and our bodies, it also can provide us with energy spurts that we can use to our advantage.
Wiccans believe that each phase of the moon works along with certain forms of magic. For a new moon, most pagans work to strive for new beginnings, clean slates, and clearing. If the moon is ‘waning’ from full to new, pagans use this energy to remove bad energy from their life. If it is waxing from new to full, they work to bring things into their life. The day of the full moon, is a time of spiritual meditation, charging of crystals, contacting deceased loved ones, honoring the dead and so much more.
So, how can you benefit from this trifecta of energy? Well, what better way than to perform one of three magical rituals?
1. Charge Some New Crystals
Begin this ritual by cleansing a sacred space outside directly under the moon. If you are unable to do this, you can clear your window seal (where the moonlight peaks through.) When nighttime comes, light some incense in your chosen area (frankincense is perfect….but anything will do.) Say a simple prayer to your higher power or even to the moon, asking for blessings to be bestowed upon your crystals. Set them directly in the moonlight and sprinkle them with water. Leave them overnight. They will be cleared and charged the next morning.
2. Take Advantage of Intuitive Energy
During the full moon, it is a wonderful time to speak to your intuition about your greatest questions. What better way to access this energy than to bring out your pendulum, tarot cards or other divinatory methods? If you are unable or don’t have any of these, you can use the next ritual instead!
3. Deep Intuitive Meditation
While not everyone has crystals, tarot cards or pendulums, everyone can benefit from meditation. And to make this even more magical, I have added some typical ‘magical’ concepts, just for you! However, please feel free to make this as unique as possible by omitting what doesn’t work for you. After all, that is the beauty of spirituality. Start by finding a quiet space and cleansing it the best you can. This can be an extra bedroom, your bathtub, a space outside or even in your living room. Just make sure you can have complete quietness during your meditation. Cleanse the space by sweeping, vacuuming, washing, and burning cleansing incense.
Once nighttime has come and you are in your space, light candles and incense. Set up your favorite spiritual props and get comfy. (If it’s a bath, sprinkle some salt in the tub and get comfortable in the hot bath.) Now, sit back and close your eyes. At first, as you breathe in and breathe out, imagine cleansing energies filling your soul as you breathe in and all negativity leaving your being when you breathe out. Do this until you are able to clear your mind as best as you can. However, don’t worry when distracting thoughts enter your mind, as they do, simply go back to focusing.
Once you are as focused as possible, ask your spirit guides, higher power or even the moon to help you understand what you need to focus on. Ask for guidance and ask for prosperity. Ask for your hearts desire if you wish. Whatever goal it is that your guides or your intuition bring to your mind- focus on it. Draw all of the energy in your body to this purpose and focus on it as long as you can. When you feel done, go back to clearing as you did when you started. End when you feel comfortable, blow out your candles or incense and then go outside to thank the moon. If you’d like to make it really magical, you can even place offerings in a bowl.
And if none of these worked for you, the following video blogger on YouTube also has a wonderful idea for a full moon ritual, so make sure you watch!
