While some of us tend to have a very positive outlook on life the rest of us seem to sabotage ourselves. This I have noticed often stems from becoming easily offended.

The things other people say and do should not hold power over you. Even when something is being directed towards us it usually is not as it seems. People get frustrated and say things they do not mean, this happens all the time.

If you want to stop being offended by things in life, you need to realize that you are just fine as you are and so is the rest of the world. Usually, when we get offended it is a misunderstanding of some kind anyway. Is there really any point in it? I don’t think there is.

“Those who are determined to be ‘offended’ will discover a provocation somewhere. We cannot possibly adjust enough to please the fanatics, and it is degrading to make the attempt.”
― Christopher Hitchens

Stop taking things personally. When someone is an asshat to you don’t get mad and lash out, tell them you are sorry that they are having a bad day and go about your own business. When we get offended we should not explode like we normally would. We should work to show kindness to those around us. Yes, even those who are the driving force behind our ‘offendedness.’

Being offended is confusing and getting offended is confusing. There is no sense in wasting our time on something so petty. When we are easily offended we are choosing to allow ourselves to become hurt or upset over nothing. Consider your role and ask yourself what it is you are really responding to.

When it comes to not becoming offended we need to separate our feelings from what is referred to as the ‘norms.’ Put yourself in the offender’s shoes and practice humility. Reserve judgment for the end. Jumping to conclusions is not going to do anyone any good.

Accept that you are not perfect and neither is anyone else. We all have our faults and no fault is worse or better than another. Understand the potential in everyone and do not let your validation come from others.

Be yourself and live your life. Do not get caught up in what other people are doing. Make things fun for yourself and the rest will fall into place.
