Gaslighting is a manipulation/psychological tactic that sadly, a lot of people use on others. Whether you’ve known about gaslighting for a while or have never heard of it, chances are you’ve been face to face with it a time or two.
When someone gaslights another person they are doing so in order to gain more power over this person. They, in doing this, are essentially forcing their victim into questioning their very sense of reality. Gaslighting comes in many forms and can be damning in many ways.
Gaslighting can be broken down into things like countering, withholding, diverting, and denial at its finest. The person who is doing the gaslighting will call you crazy, make you think you’ve done something wrong when you haven’t, and cut you off from those you care about. He or she will have you overly confused and you might even find yourself making excuses for his or her behavior.
Gaslighters will tell blatant lies and use all of the things that you care about to get what they want. You could literally have proof that they did something wrong and they would turn it around and make it seem as if you are silly for even bringing it up. You see, this is a gradual thing. They do this so that they can wear you down over time and really convince you to basically bend to their every whim.
They will say one thing and do another, you can’t really ever count on them. You will end up feeling hopeless and lost all the while they’re happy and content. You might know in your gut that something is wrong in the relationship, but you won’t be able to truly express it. Gaslighting is a very real issue and it can leave the victim feeling as if they are lost.
A gaslighter can be a partner, family member, friend, or even someone you work with. No one is immune to being manipulated in this way and it can literally happen to anyone. Just because you find yourself in this kind of situation does not mean you are weak.
You are not crazy and you are not doing anything wrong by calling this person out on their shit. Don’t buy into their games. While gaslighting is one of the most prominent and painful games to be forced into, you can come out on the other side.
