You might already know that the WHO (the World Health Organization) declared processed meat as a carcinogen just a few years back. This includes things like canned meat, bacon, and hot dogs.

While in this article we are going to be specifically focusing on hot dogs please remember that this is not limited to hot dogs. This particular investigation from 2015 involved 22 scientists assessing different kinds of cancer and the consumption of processed meats. By examining over 800 studies from several different countries they were able to make this investigation quite diverse.

It seems there is more than enough evidence to link processed meats (like hot dogs) to at the very least colorectal cancer. This for those who do not know is the second most lethal form of cancer here in the US and causes around 50,000 deaths per year. Processed meat is also linked to stomach cancer as well.

Now, according to the Global Healing Center one of the ways in which hot dogs are able to cause cancer is as follows:

Most hot dogs contain preservatives called nitrites. During the cooking process, nitrites combine with amines naturally present in meat to form carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds. It is also suspected that nitrites combine with amines in the human stomach to form N-nitroso compounds. These compounds are carcinogens and have been associated with cancer of the oral cavity, bladder, esophagus, stomach, and brain.

This kind of thing is interesting to note as the FDA even advises us to limit our intake of processed meats in order to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Another study even went so far as to find that children who ate more than 12 hot dogs per month were at nine times more of a risk of developing childhood leukemia. These are things we all need to be aware of and yet for some reason are still being kept in the dark.

What do you think about this? Will you be cutting back the number of hot dogs you allow your children to eat? At the very least you should try your best to opt for nitrate free ones, please check out the video below for more information.
