CERN Particle Collider Is Now 10 Times Brighter, Stronger, and More Terrifying

By September 26, 2018 Technology

The Large Hadron Collider at CERN has recently begun getting an upgrade and it is much stronger now. This new upgrade is going to bring with it some great changes.

According to Reuters, this boost in itself that the collider has been given will increase its luminosity and increase the number of particle collisions by at least ‘tenfold.’ This could truly be a step towards uncovering things we never thought we could. This upgrade focuses the beams of protons that smash together giving researchers a much better chance of spotting something.

CERN Director-General Fabiola Gianotti told Reuters as follows in regards:

“This will allow us to address new questions, the outstanding questions in fundamental physics, with more opportunity to find answers.”

“For me personally, solving the mystery of the dark matter of the universe would be something great,”

“Of course it would be fantastic to produce the dark matter particle in the collision of LHC beams.”

This upgrade could be the key to just that but of course, only time will tell. Because of this upgrade, the collider will be operating much brighter, stronger, and will be even more frightening in that aspect. The CERN collider is a 17-mile long ring beneath Switzerland and France but not much is known about it.

Rebeca Gonzalez Suarez, a postdoc research associate at CERN, told Gizmodo in an email as follows:

“The HL-LHC will enable us to do many things, opening many unexplored areas of research,”

For more information on this please feel free to check out the video below. What do you think this upgrade will bring? I for one cannot wait to see where things like this take us. This upgrade could potentially make lots of discoveries happen quicker and push science forward in many ways but of course, only time will tell.
