We live in a society that continuously pushing the idea that we need to find true love in order to be happy, however, is this really necessary? Perhaps, if you let go of your expectations, you will discover that happiness can be found within yourself.

Too often we put an incredible pressure on the importance of finding someone special, convinced that the only way to happiness and joy is through finding love and building a life together. However, a study published in the British Journal of Psychology reveals that people with higher IQs actually experience a lower level of satisfaction in life if they push themselves to socialize frequently. Instead, intelligent people are generally happier alone.

Why is it that intellectual people seem to struggle in their efforts to find love? The truth may be less complicated than you originally believe.

Here are 8 reasons why the most intelligent people among us are often single:

#1 – They struggle to find someone who matches them on an intellectual level.

Intellectual people are looking for more out of their relationships than just a physical connection. Instead, for a relationship to last, they also need to find someone that can connect with them on an emotional and intellectual level. If this is missing, they will slowly drift apart from their partner, uninterested in spending time together any longer.

#2 – They overthink everything, often creating mountains out of molehills,

Their ability to think through every situation can be a great strength, however, they have to be careful not to cross the line into overthinking. If they find themselves looking at every little word and action, they often begin to discover problems where one didn’t previously exist. It is for this reason that overthinkers struggle to maintain a relationship for any period of time.

#3 – They are highly self-aware.

While some people go through life unsure of who they are or where they are going, this isn’t the situation for those who are self-aware. These are people who have taken the time to figure out what kind of person they want to be, and as such, they have a good idea of who they want to surround themselves with. Highly selective, they would rather spend their time alone than lower their expectations.

#4 – They are able to see through everyone else’s lies and deceptions.

With great attention to detail, intelligent people are able to pick up on even the subtlest changes in body language and facial expression. This is important, as it can give away when some is trying to deceive them and reveal their true intentions. Unfortunately, this also opens their minds to the darker side of the human condition, which can make it difficult for them to trust others and let them into their lives.

#5 – They become bored in life very quickly.

When one lives with a higher than normal level of intellect, it takes more to provide them with the necessary mental stimulation. They enjoy situations where they are challenged, pushed to learn and discover. When this is missing from their lives, they quickly become bored, their minds wandering. In order for a relationship to last, they must find someone who is willing to engage in this type of continued learning with them.

#6 – They have specific requirements in life.

Highly intelligent people live their lives in a very specific way, some might even call them a little eccentric. They prefer to maintain the schedule and lifestyle that they are used to, which isn’t always easy. It is going to take someone special to fit into their lives, someone that fits all of their specific little requirements. They need to find someone who loves every aspect of who they are, including their flaws and quirks.

#7 – They make their goals a priority.

As I mentioned previously, intellectual people know who they are and where they are going in life. Once they have set a goal in life, there is little that can prevent them from reaching it. They make these efforts priority #1, ahead of all else including their relationships. In order for a relationship to work, they would need to find someone that is okay with coming in second.

#8 – They are unable to shut off their minds and just have fun.

An intellectual mind is always turned ‘on’, their thoughts constantly on the go. When everyone else is able to let go, enjoying the moment, this is a challenge for intelligent individuals. This is a struggle that others don’t understand, leaving them feeling alone in the world. It can create distance between them and the rest of the world.
