Intelligent people that live in deep thought may oftentimes find it hard to feel truly happy. While the rest of the population are fulfilled by having a loving partner, or a decent job, intelligent people typically will feel as if something is missing.
Why is that? Well, here are six reasons why happiness typically isn’t present within an intelligent mind.
1. Over Analyzing
Usually, intelligent people are very active thinkers. Due to this, they may get lost in thoughts of analysis, trying to break down each and every moment of their life. Of course, this can be quite exhausting, and sometimes their conclusions may bring them to despair.
Analyzing situations is not a bad trait to have, however, no one needs to stay in constant thought. Especially when it comes to negative thought. Sometimes, it may be better to ignore certain aspects of life and allow yourself to obtain some happiness.
2. They Have High Expectations
Many people who have a high IQ are quite sure of how they want everything to be, and if things fall short of their expectations they are left disappointed. Sadly, this is how they view all facets of life, including their own actions.
Of course, we never get everything the way that we want it, but those of higher intelligence don’t see life that way. While they are intelligent, they lack practical intelligence in many aspects of life. Their views are typically idealistic and due to that, they often have a hard time coping with the world.
3. They Judge Themselves Too Hard
Intelligent people can be highly critical of themselves. They constantly analyze their actions and behavior, and in turn, pick themselves apart. Of course, they do this unintentionally, but they are left in sadness nonetheless.
This doesn’t end in the present moment, either. They may find themselves revisiting past mistakes and judging themselves based on that as well.
4. They Aim for Bigger Things
With such a large IQ, it’s much easier to imagine bigger things. Usually, those of higher intelligence will look for a bigger purpose, meaning, and a pattern. Many get lost in their imagination searching for anything that is bigger or more meaningful. Sadly, their attention is driven away from the current moment, and they can’t enjoy anything they experience.
5. They Find it Harder to Find Meaningful Conversation or Someone Who Can Appreciate Them
Everyone wants to be understood, but intelligent people find it harder to find someone who actually has the capacity to understand them. Having understanding people aids in dealing with the stresses of life. There is something truly comforting about having someone to listen and understand who you are. Unfortunately, this is an extremely difficult feat for someone who is intelligent.
While science has proven that smarter people don’t need to socialize as much as others, they still need to interact with others to obtain decent conversation. However, intelligent people usually want to discuss meaningful topics which could push people away. This leaves them feeling empty, and oftentimes alone.
6. Smarter People are at a Higher Risk for Psychological Issues
Various studies have indicated that highly intelligent minds are at a higher risk for mental disorders such as bipolar or social anxiety. It could be that these issues come as a side effect for their intelligence, but science is unable to confirm this as fact.
Of course, not all intelligent people suffer from psychiatric issues. But, even if they don’t it’s likely that they will feel depression more than others due to the fact that they are continuously lost in thought.
Obviously, intelligence is not a bad thing. Yet, many people who have a higher IQ continue to find it harder than the average person to obtain a happy state of mind. If this is the case for you, maybe it is time that you mindfully seek to avoid these patterns which keep you lost in a state of constant despair. Reach outside the box of these habits, and purposefully seek happiness instead. While we know and understand that this could be harder for those who are smarter, it is entirely worth the effort.
