When Depression Manifests as Emptiness

By October 19, 2017 Depression, Psychology

Depression is a lot more than most people think. Sure, some people who are depressed feel ‘extremely sad’ but depression is so much more than that.

Tons of people who have not experienced depression think it is nothing more than being down in the dumps, however, they are sadly mistaken. Being depressed is complicated, to say the least. The list of symptoms when it comes to depression is quite long and comes with many things you would never even think of.

Depression can zap you of energy, make it impossible to focus, and everyday errands can become quite the nightmare. For me and a lot of people, depression comes with a numbness I cannot find the words to describe. It is a simple feeling of not feeling anymore. It is confusing and odd.

You could be at a funeral and yet feel nothing. Most people who suffer from depression don’t just feel sad, they also feel nothing. Personally, I think feeling nothing is much worse than feeling sad. When you are sad, or feeling down, at least there is a way to express such feelings. Sadly, when you feel empty, that just isn’t an option.

Sure, you know something is wrong but you don’t really know what to do about it. Suffering doesn’t have to fit into a box of stereotypes. Suffering comes in all shapes and sizes. Some of the most common symptoms of depression go as follows.

  • Lack of interest or pleasure
  • Decrease in eating
  • Insomnia
  • Oversleeping
  • Low energy
  • Feeling guilty
  • Feeling worthless
  • Feeling empty
  • Lack of interest in usually enjoyed activities
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Unexplained physical problems

Yes, depression can cause physical problems as well. Some people experience gastric issues while others have severe headaches or even back pain. Depression is a very serious ILLNESS. Depression really can affect all aspects of a person’s life.

Depression is not a one size fits all hat. It is different for everyone. Having a good support system is crucial for times when you aren’t feeling anything at all. I think the most important thing to remember when depression hits you hard is that you can make it through this, and you will feel again. Happiness is not out of your reach.
