Tories are outdoing themselves right now as they have decided to throw animal rights out the window. As the government in the UK begins to shape the EU withdrawal bill a vote has been taken to scrap EU legislation that sees non-human animals as sentient beings.
The Prime Minister is WRONG. The Animal Welfare Act (2006) does not provide that protection.
Absolutely no excuse for not supporting my animal sentience amendment last week. #PMQs

Under EU law, animals are currently recognized as being capable of feeling pain and emotion but MPs (members of Parliament) have voted just this week to throw this into the list of things to do away with. This vote is ridiculous as there is mounting evidence proving that animals do in fact have emotions and feelings, some stronger than our own even.

Animal welfare, in general, is already riddled with double standards and bullshit. Currently, at least 80 percent of the UK’s animal welfare legislation comes directly from the EU without those legislations what will become of them?
Caroline Lucas, Green party co-leader told the Commons as follows:
“The government have rightly and commendably committed to transferring all existing EU law on animal welfare into UK law under the bill, but because the text of the Lisbon treaty is not transferred by the bill, the wording of article 13 on animal sentience will not explicitly be incorporated into UK law.”
“The UK has no legal instrument other than article 13 of the Lisbon treaty to provide that animals are sentient beings. “
While the Animal Welfare Act 2006 is still on the books, it does not specifically mention sentience and contains only laws regarding animals in distress. Sure, pets will remain protected once all is said and done but where will this leave animals in the wild or even those in captivity? It seems there is a grim future in store for many animals to come if this plays out as it seems it will. Voting recognition of animal sentience out is a HUGE DEAL!
Who knows what will be to come in the years well on their way. MPs are going to be voting on the future of those in the UK throughout the weeks and months to come, this includes the future of other animals as well. If you are outraged about this please speak up and try to do something about it. Many will try to disagree about this and downplay its seriousness but please DO NOT be fooled. Read up on things yourself and really become active.
