Tom Hanks has served as an executive producer on many projects and starred in quite a few films. As sexual harassment allegations have been shaking Hollywood increasingly in current times Hanks is now taking his turn to speak about them.
During a roundtable discussion with Hollywood Reporter that also included James Franco, Sam Rockwell, Willem Dafoe, John Boyega, and Gary Oldman; Hanks took the time to speak about Hollywood’s growing problem with sexual exploitation. This discussion has not yet been aired in full but will around the end of January.
Hanks has been speaking out about this issue for some time now, and is the latest to begin speaking on behalf of those who need to be known. His voice holds weight and we can hope it will inspire others to begin speaking out as well.
The 61-year-old actor said that abuse of power has lead to the rampant reports of inappropriate sexual behavior in the film industry. He makes a number of points and acknowledges the darker side of Hollywood. He also expressed that he believes Hollywood can be turned around and make a change if they truly wish to turn things around.
“There’s a lot of reasons people do this for a living. Making a movie is a life experience that can create an awful lot of joy. You can meet the person you fall in love with, you can laugh your heads off. That’s the good stuff. The bad stuff can happen on a movie as well. There are some people who go into this business because they get off on having power. And the times they feel the most powerful, which is why they went into the business, are when they are hitting on somebody who’s underneath them, [and] I don’t necessarily mean completely sexually. There are predators absolutely everywhere.”
I am glad that all of this is finally coming out and that the world is beginning to take notice. With Sexual harassment allegations plaguing Hollywood we can only hope that something is done soon, those who are doing these things need to be made aware that they are not indestructible.
Now that Hanks has been coming out and speaking on this matter in a number of ways I hope more people begin to take notice. Hanks says he fully supports Hollywood sexual abuse victims for sharing their stories and that even he has been shocked at some of the allegations coming out of the woodworks.
When asked by CNN if he was surprised at the list of alleged perpetrators and this was his response:
“Am I surprised by some of the personalities involved? Not Harvey”
“He had a way of doing business … that would not make you surprised to have him be one of those kind of guys that does that in the workplace.”
Hank has no sympathy for any of the men who are being accused of stepping over the line and actually gave CNN a clear message for them. You can check out a clip from him speaking at the roundtable and several other instances of him speaking out.
