Alan Watts, who is a truly insightful British philosopher, changed my entire perspective on life within four minutes. In this video, he explains what life actually is, and why most of us are unhappy with our current situation.
Watts uses a beautiful metaphor to explain the point of our existence in this short, yet enlightening four-minute video. In his words, the world, our universe, and all of the life contained within it is playful in its purest form. Music he says is also “essentially playful.” To him, music is different than travel. Why? When traveling, we are attempting to reach a destination.
When a composer plays music they aren’t trying to reach a destination or an ending point. Instead, they are playing just to play. Eventually, of course, a destination is reached, however, in the meantime, the composer is simply playful. Possibly, the composer may get lost in the beautiful keys he plays, and that is the beauty of it.
In our lives, we are so busy attempting to meet an end that we never have a chance to embrace the moment. Constantly, we are chasing quotas or reaching goals, however, we never just breathe in the air of the moment. Our lives revolve around retirement. Which in our society, means we save every penny we have so that our grandchildren can place us in a retirement home. Never do we just sit back. Never do we dance to the music of our lives. Never do we sing. Isn’t it time to stop and listen to the melody, and to take a moment to sing the chorus of a lifetime?
Watch this video, and we promise, it will change your life.
