While we are unsure when an ‘apocalypse’ or other extreme natural disasters may occur it is always important to be prepared. When it comes to stocking up on foods that have a long shelf life we need to get the most of the ones that last the longest.
There are some foods that can actually be stored for decades and still come out okay to eat. With that being said, even those with a year long shelf life can prove to be essential. In the list below you will find the foods with the longest shelf life. If you don’t have these already you may want to stock up at some point.
Honey can be stored for an extremely long period of time. It has even been reported that 3,000-year-old honey was found when excavating the tombs in Egypt. This honey was perfectly fine to eat! Isn’t that mind-blowing? This is because the honey is low in water and high in sugar leaving a place that bacteria cannot grow on.
White rice can last around 20 years (possibly longer) if you store it properly. This is something that can be used as a staple diet and should be included in your ‘preparations.’ This is a great thing for me as I already eat rice all the time as it is.
3. Dried Corn
Corn when properly dried and kept away from moisture can last for years upon years. This is again another staple kind of food that will benefit you. It could even be added to the rice if you were feeling a bit resourceful.
If you keep these things dry they will last for a really really long time. They will not lose their potency or their flavor. If you like your morning coffee I suggest stocking up on an instant version just in case you need it.
Yes, dehydrated carrots. These can and will last around 20 years and are delicious. I can’t live without carrots so this is a must for me.
Dried beans can also remain fine for a long time. They have a shelf life of about 30 years. This can be any kind of bean you want so the possibilities are endless.
7. Pasta Products
Pasta products have a shelf life of about 30 years as well when stored properly. They are also limitless when it comes to different varieties. There is plenty of room for diversity.
Potato flakes can last about 30 years and are a necessity. If you really think about it you have a lot of really good options when it comes to surviving on these foods. Most of these are things I eat now as it is.
Salt makes everything better and has a long shelf life. If you store it correctly it will last almost indefinitely. This is important when it comes to pickling or curing other foods to be stored.
Like salt sugar is also able to be kept for a very long time. However, moisture is a huge problem, if you can keep the moisture out then you are all set. I suggest keeping everything hermetically sealed with an added moisture absorber.
Dark chocolate can last for a few years if it is stored properly and will give you a bit of a treat when hard times hit. I love dark chocolate and would be ecstatic to get to eat it during the ‘end of the world.’ With that being said, in some cases it will begin to look molded when it isn’t because the fat rises to the top at a certain temperature. Blooming chocolate is nothing to be worried about.
