Our minds can do a lot more than we give them credit for. There is, however, a lot more to treating ourselves with our minds than you would think.
When it comes to healing our minds can be powerful tools. Before we get into this I would like to go over the placebo effect. The placebo effect is the idea that your brain can convince your body that a fake treatment is a real treatment. Without any kind of real treatment, your mind tricks your body into healing itself. While the placebo itself is not shrinking your tumors or something else of the sort your mind believes it is, your brain is working with your body to fix you.
Now, the thing with the placebo effect is that a lot of people think it will only work if you don’t know you are getting a placebo but that is not the case. A study from 2014 led by Kaptchuk and published in Science Translational medicine actually explored this by testing how people reacted to migraine pain medications. The participants were separated into three groups. One group got something with the drug’s name labeled properly, another got something with a label that merely said ‘placebo,’ and the last group got nothing.
The researchers found that somehow this placebo was still about 50 percent as effective as the real drug when it came to reducing migraine attacks. This meaning that even when you are aware you are getting a placebo positive things can happen. That being said, you don’t have to take a placebo to practice self-help. You can use meditation, healthy eating, and exercise as your own personal ‘placebos’.
There are over 3500 case studies throughout the medical literature of patients who have out of nowhere gotten better from illnesses that were going to bring them to the end of their lives. Everything, even cancer just gone. With numbers like these, it is clear this is not something that is as rare as science makes it out to be.
Dr. Lissa Rankin who has written books on this subject stresses that mainstream medicine does not and cannot represent the universe of potentially valuable treatment protocols or modalities. She believes that the state of our minds, emotions, and so forth play a role in things as well and have the ability to turn on or off our body’s ability to heal itself. You can learn more about all of this in the videos below. There are many different takes you can have on this sort of thing but the ultimate realization is that our minds CAN heal us one way or another.
