This spacecraft has been lost for eight years and in that time it has somehow made its way back towards Earth. NASA is now detecting it through their radars, what will come of this?
NASA has recently found an Indian spacecraft that lost contact with the Earth eight years ago. It is currently orbiting our moon. This was detected using the NASA’s Earth-based radars. The spacecraft is known as Chandrayaan-1 and originated from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) It left Earth back in 2008 and has not been heard from since 2009.
While you would think that finding something like this so close to us would be a simple task, however, it is not. We have enough trouble finding space debris in our own orbit as it is. This spacecraft is only about five feet one each side and is quite tiny compared to other spacecraft. It is a spec compared to the moon. Our moon is also covered with regions we refer to as mascons which have a much higher than usual gravitational pull. This causes spacecrafts to even on occasion crash into the lunar surface.
After these eight years of radio silence, we had no way of knowing if this spacecraft was still orbiting the moon or not. It had been classified as lost up until now. Chandrayaan-1 was India’s first mission to the moon and it was meant to perform chemical and geological mapping. It had completed its mission ten months after being sent out and no one knows the condition it is in at this point. We are also unaware of what it has been doing all this time.
This is a great finding because it shows that we can now keep track of our spacecrafts better. We are able to monitor for hazards more accurately and are moving up without a doubt. Who knows what else is to come, this is truly amazing. For a little more information on this please take the time to watch the video below.
