According to currently pending legislation, Missouri women could soon be fired for their choice to use birth control. Yes, you heard that right, FIRED for using birth control.
The bill, which is known as SB 5 was first passed by the Senate on June 14 shortly after a special session had ended. The session, which was led by Greitens, was to introduce the notion that employers and housing providers should be able to punish women who chose to use protection.
The new bill would overturn previous legislation which prevented them from taking such information into consideration. It would be targeted at abortion services and would add a pile of restrictions. Furthermore, it would allow housing providers and employers with the ability to screen potential homeowners and employees for birth control use.
While it would seem to be common sense that potential employees or potential homeowners should NOT be discriminated against for their choice to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy, Eric Greitens feels that the legislation was introduced by ‘radical politicians.’ He further feels that it is his duty to turn St. Louis into an ‘abortion sanctuary city.’
Unfortunately, due to such legislation, thousands upon thousands of women will now be put at risk of losing their jobs or their homes due to their choice to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Sadly, in turn, it would seem that more women would choose to take the chance of getting pregnant, and that abortion would go up. Obviously, the governor doesn’t see it that way, but it does make you wonder.
As it stands, the bill is awaiting being sent back to Congress for full approval. And if it passes, it will go straight to Governor Greitens’ desk for final approval. If you live in Missouri and you oppose this bill, please contact your state representative and let your voice be heard.
