Something pretty interesting has unfolded in the Gobi desert as a group of Chinese researchers recently managed to teleport a photon to a satellite sitting over five hundred kilometers above the surface of our planet. This is amazing!
This was able to be achieved through something known as quantum entanglement, a process where two particles react as one with no physical connection between them; when one is altered they are both altered. This is the first object to be teleported into space, but one of several to be teleported in general. Back in 2010, Shanghai set the record by actually teleporting photons over 60 miles on the Earth’s surface. Being able to do this over 500km shows us that something quite amazing is coming.
This kind of experiment is usually performed in laboratories so this instance is the first for it to be performed outside of a laboratory. Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China said that they accomplished “the first quantum teleportation of independent single-photon qubits from a ground observatory to a low Earth orbit Satellite through an up-link channel with a distance of up to 1400km.” While it was a technologically challenging experiment it according to Dr. Pryde was not actually as impressive as it sounds.
The main goal for quantum teleportation at this time is not to move humans from one place to another but to create a unhackable communications network. According to Prof. Zeilinger, the Chinese city of Jinan has already begun trials of a secure network base using quantum technology. “Quantum internet” is what you would call this and it would be useful for refreshing the quantum key used to send encrypted information.
