Chances are you already knew which painkiller I was referring to already, Acetaminophen more commonly known as Tylenol. This painkiller as mentioned in the title can be found in well over 600 different medications.
We already know Tylenol is NOT good for our health but this makes it even worse. According to a study carried out by Dr. Dominik Mischkowski Acetaminophen does not just kill our pain, it also kills our empathy. Based on his findings people who have taken this do not care about the feelings of those around them as much as they would had they not taken it in the first place. This comes as no surprise when you consider research that was done in the past.
It was found in the past that it reduces positive emotions in those who take it. Researchers are not sure as to why the drug is having this effect on people but it is. It is especially concerning because empathy is well, important. This study was carried out on 80 college students.
Half of the students were given a dose of one thousand mg of acetaminophen while the other half were the placebo. They then read a series of stories about people who had been hurt and were asked to rate their pain. The results showed that those who took the drug showed a lower pain rating than the placebo for the people in the stories. There were a few different variations of tests carried out and all came to the same conclusion.
Researchers are now going to be testing the same thing with Ibuprofen to see how it goes. The study I have been referring to was published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience and if you want to look over it please click here. When you really think about it this explains a lot, tons of people take Tylenol and other drugs containing Acetaminophen on a daily basis.
