Southern India has made a breakthrough in small-scale wind power by developing a unique wind turbine that is just as small as a small bedroom fan. The price for such a thing is a measly $750 U.S dollars, yet has the ability to provide 5kwh per day, meaning that for the price of an iPhone you can power your entire home for a lifetime!
The company responsible for the invention is Avant Garde Innovations (AGI) and the two brothers that launched the company, Arun and Annop George, believe that their new invention could actually solve the worldwide energy crisis. According to them, their goal is eradicate energy poverty, reduce dependence on local power grids and encourage further self sufficiency by providing affordable, renewable energy to the masses. “In doing so, we believe we can collectively usher in our world a cleaner environment, new economic prosperity and social change.”
“Recognized by the United Nations Foundation, AGI’s turbine is capable of generating power even at very low wind speeds. The 1 kw-capacity equipment can provide about five units of power every day — deemed enough for meeting the energy needs of a middle-income household every day. Its compact design, said Arun George, enables the system to run for years without frequent maintenance.”
As far as environmental efficiency and self-sufficiency go, wind power is where its at. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the machine provides families with the ability to completely move off-grid, there are many areas which have legislation that makes wind turbines similar to these illegal.
“Here’s the deal: For a home wind turbine to be worth your investment, you really need to live on an acre or more. That’s the guideline from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Guide to Small Wind Electric Systems, a free publication for homeowners. Living in a rural area helps, because if you’re in a residential neighborhood, you’re likely to run into conflicts with zoning and local homeowners associations. Additionally, you’re more likely to find a high average wind speed in wide open spaces far from windbreaks such as buildings and trees. Altogether, while installing a small wind turbine in a city or suburb is certainly possible, you’re much more likely to have the right conditions for home wind power if you live well outside city limits.”
This small scale wind turbine could prove to be a game-changer for off-grid living, and furthermore on a larger scale by possibly solving the energy crisis that plagues many nations worldwide. Of course, there are many municipal areas that would prove difficult in living a more self-sufficient, off-the-grid lifestyle, however, in other situations for those that dwell on an acre or more, it could be an extremely efficient option for sustainable power with little out of pocket expense.
