How can we define adulthood? Many would argue that in order to be considered adult, one would have to display certain skills first.
And while I agree, exactly what skills are necessary to be considered an adult? Well, according to various psychologists, in order to be mature, one needs to first fine tune certain aspects of their emotions in a skillful manner. Of course, as all skills are, they are just that, skills. Meaning they can be learned with practice. So, without further ado, these are the emotional skills necessary to be “adult.”
1. The Ability to Regulate Your Own Emotions
While all humans are capable of demonstrating emotions, being able to regulate our emotions is key to being able to work our way through life.
2. The Power of Persuasion
By a certain age, we should be able to persuade others to say yes, whether it is asking for a raise at work, or trying to persuade someone to join us for an evening out.
Patience, patience, patience. It is everything and is a necessary emotional skill necessary to adult.
While children are emotionally reliant on others, by adulthood, we should be able to do the majority of our tasks without assistance.
We don’t have to agree with others, but, it is essential to be able to tolerate other people.
6. Admit When We Are Wrong
Being able to admit to your mistakes is a necessary rite of passage into the adult world.
Children are known to lie on occasion and so are adults. However, the ability, to be honest, is a sign of maturity.
How do you expect to pay your bills and keep a stable life without discipline?
9. Being Able to Ask for Help
So many of us are unable to ask for help. However, sometimes, help is necessary in order for us to meet our goals and accomplish certain tasks.
