As we go through life, we will find ourselves in situations of heartbreak and despair on at least a few occasions. And while we are often told that it will pass and that the pain we feel is merely emotional, science claims that it is much more than that.
As a matter of fact, heartbreak oftentimes appears with physical symptoms. And while for some these can be mild flutters of the heart, for others these symptoms can be downright devastating.
1. Digestive Issues
Due to the stress of breaking up, heartbreak is often followed by digestive issues. For some, you may find yourself eating more, however for others, you may have no appetite at all. Many reports having experiences nausea, indigestion, severe stomach pain, and even stomach ulcers. Studies claim that this is due to our body releasing stress hormones, and you can read more on that by following this link.
2. Withdrawal Symptoms
While many joke that love is a drug, this statement is actually more fact than fiction. According to Stony Brook University, the anguish that we experience during a breakup activates the same part of the brain that is stimulated by addiction.
Everyone has certain risk factors for depression/anxiety, however, your risk is increased significantly while going through a hard breakup. The Daily Mail reports that per psychologist Dr. Susan Quilliam, heartbreak can bring back dark memories of past abandonment or trauma, which in turn can cause us to experience deeply intense anguish.
Due to increased levels of anxiety, and the rampant thoughts that follow, those that are going through a split also experience difficulty falling/staying asleep.
5. Broken Heart Syndrome (Yes….this is a real thing.)
Many people who are going through a split also encounter lowered immunity, increased blood pressure and heart rate and even significant muscle weakness. This is a physical condition related to heartbreak known as broken heart syndrome.
6. Literal Heart Damage
A small study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine found that the emotional stress associated with a breakup can cause serious heart damage, even in patients that don’t have coronary heart disease. This is due to exaggerated responses in the sympathetic nervous system.
7. Specific Body Parts Go Nuts
This can range from muscle spasms to headaches and even can cause acne. Some people even experience rashes/hives.
