Bullying is a huge issue that a lot of people go through on a daily basis. A person can be bullied because they are a different religion, race, not as pretty, overweight, or any other reason.
Regardless of why someone is being bullied, sitting by while it happens is not the answer. Combating bullying can literally save a life. The more people go through it, the more alone they feel. If you help someone to feel less alone they will forever be grateful.
If you haven’t heard of non-complementary behavior then this article is for you. This is sometimes difficult to carry out but can be a very useful tool when combating bullies. In a sense, non-complimentary behavior is responding to something the opposite way in which someone would expect us to.
We do not always have to stand by while something is happening, sometimes we can be the help that person needs. Below you will find the 5 steps to shutting down a bully. You don’t have to do much, just don’t be the person who just lets it happen.
Say you notice someone being bullied here is what you should do:
Step 1: Approach the person being bullied and ignore the attacker. Tell them who you are and ask their name, engage them in conversation all the while not paying much attention to the bully.
Step 2: Distract the victim, make them feel like the bully is not even there. Focus on this person and what he or she is saying until the attacker leaves.
Step 3: If the attacker will not walk away you and the victim need to do so, this can be done by simply offering to walk with the victim where he or she needs to go or offer to call someone for them if they feel threatened.
Step 4: Make sure the attacker is not in sight when you part ways. This will help to make both of you feel more secure. If somehow things get physical, call the police, as allowing things to escalate is not the answer.
Step 5: Do not part ways until everyone is in a safe place. Remember to respect the wishes of the victim no matter what though, if they want to go on their own you cannot stop them. It is best to stop in neutral areas so that the victim can recollect themselves then they can decide where to go from there.
It is easy to ignore these types of things, standing up can be hard but it is important. We are all human beings, no one deserves to be bullied.
