Depression is something tons of people in this world live with every single day. Many people do not realize just how serious and real this illness is.
If you are not someone who has depression the following may come to you as a surprise and of course if you suffer from depression you most likely know these things to be true or need to hear them. You are amazing and no matter what you are going through it will get better. Please remember, no matter what you are going through in life, you are not alone.
1. Depression is real
Depression is a real illness. It is not something that can simply be thought away. You would not tell someone with cancer that they weren’t sick so why would you tell someone with depression that?
2. Depression does not define you as a person
You are still you, depression is a temporary state not who you are.
3. Everyone’s depression is different
Depression is not one size fits all, your depression may be completely different than my depression and there is nothing wrong with that. It does not invalidate your depression or mine.
4. Depression is treatable
Depression is one of the most studied mental health issues. There are tons of different treatment options if one doesn’t work for you do not give up, there are plenty of others to try.
5. Don’t suffer through this alone
You can and will get through this. You are not alone so don’t go through it alone. Talk to someone if it will make you feel even the slightest bit better. You are not burdening others by speaking up.
6. Thoughts of suicide
People dealing with depression are going through much more than you might think they are.
7. Depression is more than being ‘sad’
A depressed person is not just sad it is a numbness, it is a feeling of worthlessness that you just cannot get over. It is a much deeper feeling than just ‘blue.’
8. Depression has physical symptoms
A person suffering from depression is also dealing with headaches, stomachaches, HBP, fatigue, and a constant exhausted feeling.
9. Depression can affect any and everyone
Your age, gender, or race, does not matter to depression.
10. Living with depression is hard
It is not easy to live with depression. I repeat, it is NOT easy to live with depression.
11. Even happy people can be depressed
As I mentioned above anyone can have depression. Just because someone looks happy does not mean they are. You can have the best life possible and still be depressed.
12. Major depression actually changes your brain functioning
Like I said it is a real illness, and no matter what other people think, the mind of a depressed person functions a lot differently than most.
