When it comes to dating sometimes we can end up with the wrong person for a lot longer than we should. We tend to give people more time than they deserve and because of that, we get stuck in relationships that are going nowhere.

Dating is not as easy as it may seem and it is never as straightforward as we would like for it to be. There are tons of things that can go wrong and lots of red flags to look for. If the person you’re spending your time with is going to be a problem in the future the signs will be present now whether you see them or not.

Below I am going to go over some of the most common red flags that you as a person should be keeping an eye out for. These red flags will help you spot toxic people right off the bat and allow you time to cut those out of your life who do not deserve to be by your side. You will be surprised how often people who are not going to last will try to make their way into our lives.

12 Red Flags You Should Know To Look Out For In Relationships:

1. Abusive behaviors are present.

If you are being abused in any form you should never stick around. Whether you’re being physically, verbally, emotionally or abused in any other form you should do what you have to do to get out of the situation. There is no excuse for abuse and you need to remember that.

2. You do not know where you stand in the relationship.

Couples who are unable to define the relationship fully are only wasting their time. You as a human being deserve to know where you stand. Do not let someone string you along for no reason.

3. They are always raising their voice.

If you are dating someone who is constantly yelling or getting worked up, you need to jump ship. If the person you are dating isn’t able to keep their cool now they will only progress to be worse in the future. Sometimes dodging a bullet like that one is well worth it in the long-run.

4. They refuse to open up about the past.

Dating is a bit frustrating when the person you’re with won’t open up about the things he or she has been through. Sure, there are things that they will keep to themselves but when they’re struggling they need to be able to come to you. The more closed off your partner is the worse struggle you will end up having.

5. You never know what kind of person you’re coming home to.

If you are dating someone who is constantly changing who he or she is, you’re not going to be happy. Sure, we all change, and we all grow but you shouldn’t be on edge wondering what mood your partner is going to be in when you get home. You should never allow someone to take his or her struggles and pains out on you.

6. Feeling secure and satisfied is fleeting.

When you’re in a relationship you need to feel secure and satisfied. While you’re going to have ups and downs, you need to be able to feel comfortable once everything is said and done. Your partner is supposed to make you feel like you’re the only person in the world who truly matters.

7. They are still hung up on a past relationship.

While there is nothing wrong with looking back from time to time, those who are stuck on past loves are not going to be able to love you in the ways they should. If you’re unable to move forward fully, you shouldn’t be in a relationship.

8. You cannot trust them or they do not trust you.

Trust is one of those things you should never compromise on. If you don’t trust your partner or your partner does not trust you there is no point in being together. This will drive a wedge between the two of you and eventually force you apart in one way or another as is.

9. There is no healthy sense of communication between the two of you.

Communication is something you have to have in order to have a proper functioning relationship. If you cannot talk to your partner then you should not be with him or her. There need to be boundaries and you need to be able to come to one another when issues arise.

10. They are more controlling than they should be.

Sure, it’s normal for there to be a mild sense of control regarding one another but you are not capable of ruling his or her life, and he or she is not capable of ruling your life. At the end of the day you make your own decisions and so does your partner. If your partner is unable to face that something has got to give.

11. They are not reliable.

Being with someone who is constantly canceling plans or letting you down is not something most people can keep dealing with for long. You want to be with someone who is there when you need them, not someone you can’t call when times get rough. Being unreliable is something that will shine through the cracks of your relationship quickly.

12. Their family is a problem/doesn’t like you.

When the person you are with has a family that does not like you or is too overly protective in general it creates issues within the relationship. Your partner is not able to change who his or her family is, either you deal with it or you leave. Most of the time there is no changing someone’s mind regarding whether or not you are accepted in their circle.
