When it comes to being an adult there is a lot more to it than most people realize. Just because you are considered an ‘adult’ doesn’t mean you are emotionally where you need to be, we all have room to grow in more ways than we tend to think.
Do you know the difference between the emotions you feel? Can you look at things from different perspectives? Are you mature emotionally? Sure, none of us are perfect, but when it comes to the areas listed below if we have room to work on things, why not work on things?
12 Emotional Skills All Adults Should Have But Most Don’t:
1. The ability to read other people’s emotions.
Being able to read the things other people are feeling is important. This helps us to prevent saying or doing something to hurt them further. If someone is upset you should be able to pick up on it within reason.
2. Being able to stay on track even when times get rough.
You should be able to persevere even when you think you are going to lose your shit. This means knowing you are broke and coming up with the money you need. This is and always will be defying odds.
Standing your ground means not folding under the pressure other people put on you. This is a lot easier said than done. I guess when you were younger it was called peer pressure, it is still called peer pressure even when you grow up.
4. The ability to get through awkward situations.
You should be able to get through awkward situations and talk about things that need to be talked about. You have to be able to speak up even when you aren’t sure what to say. This is so much easier once you really get started doing it the right ways.
5. The ability to be there for yourself in the ways others are not.
This is probably my favorite thing on this whole list. You have to be able to be there for yourself. If you need someone to cry to, cry to yourself. If you need someone to listen, listen to yourself. Sometimes you are all that you have got.
6. The ability to actually talk about things that are hard to talk about.
Sometimes we have to talk about things that are really hard to talk about. This is something even I struggle with. You have to work through this.
7. The ability to wait when you should.
When you are rushing things you only end up making mistakes. The ability to wait is something most people these days are lacking. For instance, if you make a cake but it says to let it chill overnight, don’t dig in after an hour or two. Be patient. Patience is EVERYTHING in this world.
Don’t let the things that might happen overshadow the things that actually happen. Life is too short to spend it obsessing over things that don’t matter. If you can’t change it, stop giving it power.
9. The ability to manage positive emotions.
Don’t let yourself get too caught up in the good things. This puts our heads up too high. Be humble, sure being positive is fine, but don’t be ‘that person.’
10. The ability to tell smaller more intense emotions apart.
You should always strive to tell the difference in your own emotions. You should know the difference between anger and jealousy, or rage and being upset. This is not something that will be easy but it is important.
11. The ability to be there for those who need you.
You need to be there for the people who are there for you. Sometimes we all need a helping hand. If someone is hurting, console them. It means a lot more than you realize.
Being nervous is a part of life. We all experience this and we all have to overcome it. Don’t let fear hold you back. Chase your goals and follow your dreams even when you are shaking in your boots.
